Options in Retail industry in India..

Here is an interesting blog I came across, for those interested in pursuing options in the Indian retail industry! Coming from a person who has just entered the recruitment domain, it comes with a fresh perspective...

We are all aware that the retailing industry has been around in India right since the days of Maharajahs and elephants. Back then, you could stroll into the market square, perhaps on designated days, and buy anything as varied as vegetables, slaves, and diamonds. All for a couple of copper and/or gold coins!

With evolution of civilization and the onset of a democratic and free India, retailing meant everyone from your ‘friendly neighborhood’ tiny grocery store reeking of a mix of odors from its jam-packed collection of spices, detergents, flour, and so on, right up to the strategically located showrooms of the shoe giant, Bata India. A strong network of wholesalers, C & F agents, and distributors with their proactive sales paraphernalia ensured that multinational giants such as Unilever, ITC, Pharma majors, et al, reached their target customers with absolute ease through the retail outlets. Some of the retailers either branched out to different locations, or upgraded themselves to larger spaces in a new avatar – the supermarkets.

So, what if someone wanted to have a career in retail back then? Well, no one really did! They either set up their own little store hoping to close the day, everyday, with a nice bundle of cash to take home. The not-so-lucky ones would join up as shop assistants, attending to customers at the counter, and to the owner’s errands with equal panache - all with the hope of owning their little shops one day into the future! And then, of course, there would be blink-your-eye-and-you’d-miss-him accountant showing himself for a couple of hours to catch up with maintaining the day’s accounts.

Gladly, the situation is dynamically different today. We have almost all the global retailing majors such as Metro, Wal Mart, Foodworld, etc., coming in (apart from our very own pan-Indian groups, Aditya Birla, Bharti, Reliance, RPG, Spencers, Vishal et al) to set up their ambitious retail chain of superstores and hyper stores through every possible town and city in India. With their proven expertise in sales and management of retail chains in other parts of the globe, they hope to tap the world’s most growing economy with the simple mantra of ‘giving more than the customer expects’. So you have the whole gamut of marketing skills being employed from wooing customers with discount coupons, quantity discounts, freebies, and sometimes, free tickets to the latest blockbuster or a celebrity event – to name a few. Now herein lies the tale that is of equal interest to us recruiters, and you, the jobseeker, alike! Of drooling interest, if I may add…

Never before has the average jobseeker have it so good. In fact, this is the next best thing that could happen to them right after the BPO influx, which re-defined recruiting parameters in customer service. The booming retail industry offers as many interesting options in terms of a career, and I am talking of a well-defined career here, for those who seek it. They could be anyone from the front-ender store help, serving the crowd of customers across the floor sections, to the unobtrusive retail outlet manager…and up across the hierarchy ladder.

With practically a zero number of retail chains to source a battle-ready workforce, the mega-retail ventures are picking people from those just into the employment market, and for critical positions, from across sales departments in other industries. We have observed these developments with interest, and would highly recommend this industry to those who would love to ride a stallion across the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to eventually have their pick of Mackenna’s glittering gold! So, here’s wishing you all success………

Which is the FIRST JOB one should take!!?

It is that part of the year when most colleges have had the placement season, and so I have been getting a lot of calls -not just from the students-but their anxious parents too!!

Some of the most popular questions are

-which is the HOT sector to get into?
-there are three companies coming for the interview TODAY- which one should I attend?
-If I confirm yes to two companies, I am out of the placement race-how do I choose the best?
-please help me decide between two offers-one paying me more-and another closer to my hometown!

Personally, I am of the opinion that at the beginning of one's career, what ONE LEARNS is more important than what ONE EARNS. So the advice I have been giving is

1. Take a job where you will have a great boss.

Don’t underestimate the importance of a good mentor early in your career. Your first “real” boss is the person who will show you the ropes, develop your skills and may even mentor you for the rest of your career. If you come across someone you’d love to work for and learn from, you’ve found a good opportunity.

2. Work for an organization with a well defined management training program.

It is almost a corollary of the point 1. A structured orientation and training program will go a long way in rounding one's foundations better-than say your being hired in a large company /big brand /high salary and being on one's own.

3. Do something you totally love doing.

Even if a job is not very prestigious and doesn’t have the best boss in the world, I think you’ll still be happy if you absolutely love the work you’re doing every day. There is no substitute for spending eight hours or more a day working on something fun, exciting or fascinating to you.

In a career span, that is likely to last atleast 4 decades from now, one will see enough cyclical trends to realise that all these "hot" sectors of today-will not be the flavour for too long! And that there is enough space -for the BEST in any field!

Do reach me out on menon@optionsindia.com for any clarifications!!

Happy hunting!

Dream job for recruiters...who want to be CONSULTANTS

If you are of the opinion that recruitment is not just downloading resumes from naukri, then lets talk!!

We at Options like to find the best people for any mandate our clients give us. And for that we feel it is the passive jobseeker that we wish to attract.

We meet candidates. Talk to them. Understand their aspirations. And if we have something exciting only, shall we put them across to our clients!

Ofcourse before we even reach out to them, we do research. We use bulletin boards, egroups and even web 2.0 tools like blogging, social networking sites to reach out. Most often, the best arent looking out for jobs. But then they arent aware they can be doing better roles :-)!

We at Options use an automated resume management system to record & use the data!!

We invite you to share your dreams and ideas on how we could work together..and add value to our candidates, clients and ofcourse, to ourselves!!

Should you want to join Team OPTIONS, do send us a note on " HOW I WISH TO BE A CONSULTANT " and mail it to hiring@optionsindia.com

Networking to find a job

Following up on my last posting on the importance of networking, here is an article that emphasises the same.

To summarise, one must look at a relationship like a bank account. You can only withdraw to the extent of deposits you have made in the past! And with time, with a proven track record, even bankers are known to give you overdraft facility, no?

To add, I feel it pays to network with recruiters!!

-most of them have a pulse of whats happening the industry and can brief you about the trends in the industry, and how one can keep oneself abreast with the contemporary needs.
-most of them have good networks themselves who can help
-yes, they are also forever looking for leads for their clients-and if you help them occasionally, you can remain in the radar!!

I personally feel using web 2.0 tools like social networking sites and blogs-can immensely help in 'being accessible' and you would be surprised by the amount of people who would reach out to network with you.

A caveat while actively involved in online social networking, please remember one is easily 'google-able'!! And so one must be careful in leaving alibis, or making casual comments which can be misconstrued -and could prove potentially harmful!

Please feel free to reach me offline on menon@optionsindia.com and I can share some of my experiences

Happy hunting!

Being at the right place at the right time!

It is about 23yrs back that I first looked out for a job.

I have now been a recruiter for over 15yrs-and must share a secret- things havent changed much- itsnt the best person that always gets the best job!! It is most often..the right person at the right place!!

Havent we all wondered- there are so many people who deserve to be in a better role? Well itsnt about 'what you know', but more often, its got to do with 'whom you know'!!

Or to put it differently..."who knows you"!!

Yes, there is a large role that networking can play in one's career. Are we all prepared for it?

Its all about building bridges before we need it.About developing relationships that can add value to one other.

For a starter, try and reach out to all your known acquaintances. Your classmates at school and college. Immediate seniors or juniors who would recall you. Reach to a larger bunch of alumni from your alma mater. Your neigbours. Your ex colleagues from your present employer. Your colleages from an ex-employer. Competition. Associates.

And help them get better. Add value to them, thru your contacts. Simple.

In this modern world, you will be surprised how easy it is to just stay in touch. A mobile phone away. A sms. Email. Instant messaging? A scrap on orkut? You relive your good ole days, stay in touch-and presto, you are soon the 'contact person' everyone remembers 'top of the mind'!!

Do mail menon@optionsindia.com and let me know how its going!! And let me know if I can assist you anyway.

Cheers.

PS- it helps to network with recruiters too :-)!
